Plan this huntHunting dama gazelle here
The dama gazelle is the largest gazelle in the world and one of the most striking animals on the property: long-legged and slender, white across the belly, rump and face, with a rich chestnut neck and back, and S-curved, ringed horns that sweep back and then hook forward at the tips. On open ground it looks less like a deer than a piece of the Sahara.
In its native range across the southern edge of the Sahara it is critically endangered, reduced by drought, overgrazing and unregulated hunting to small scattered groups. Ranch herds in Texas are a meaningful part of the dama gazelle that are left in the world, and the hunting of surplus animals is part of what pays for keeping them.
They are a browsing gazelle that prefers open country with scattered brush, and they are wary in the way of every animal that survives by seeing danger first. A dama gazelle is tall enough to look over most of the cover a hunter would use, so the approach is slow and the shot is often longer than people expect. Few hunters have seen one in the wild. This is one of the places you can.
