Deer are limited. Exotics are not.

The state issues this ranch a set number of tags, and only the bucks actually on the property can be taken - a score has to be standing here to be hunted. Deer hunts get coordinated ahead and the best of them go early. Exotics carry no season and no cap.

The stay

Your stay is quoted with your hunt.

The trophy fee is the animal. Your lodging, guide and the rest of what comes with every hunt are priced with you when the hunt is planned, by the person who plans it.

Texas hunting license required. State season applies.

Hunting whitetail deer here

South Texas whitetail need no introduction to anyone reading this page, and this is the one animal here where the hunter usually knows more about the quarry than any description could add. What is worth saying is how it is priced. Whitetail is quoted on a score ladder rather than by a single trophy fee, because that is how hunters already read this market and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Score the buck, read the rung, and there is no conversation about the number afterwards.

The brush country produces the deer it produces because of what it is: mesquite, blackbrush and prickly pear over sandy loam, low rainfall, and a nutritional profile that puts mass on antlers when the year cooperates. Hunting them here is classic South Texas — a blind over a feeder or a sendero crossing before light, glassing the cut lines, and the patience to let a good three-year-old walk. Rattling works in the pre-rut and works well, and if you have never rattled in a mature South Texas buck it is worth building the trip around.

One important distinction: whitetail is a native species, so it follows state seasons and tag requirements in addition to the Texas hunting license required for all hunts here. Sort the paperwork before you travel rather than at a counter in Duval County. What comes with the hunt and the freedom to hunt from a blind or off the truck are the same as on an exotic hunt.

  • Safari-style, off the front of the truck
