Hunting black hawaiian ram here

The Black Hawaiian is a hair sheep raised on Texas ranches for its horns, and it is as simple to describe as its name: solid black from nose to hoof, with a heavy set of horns that curl back and around in a tight spiral. The black coat makes the horns stand out, and a mature ram with a full, heavy curl is a handsome trophy on any wall.

It is also a good first hunt. The Black Hawaiian is not the most difficult animal on this board, and that is part of its appeal. It gives a young hunter, a first-timer or a hunter bringing family along a real stalk and a real decision without three days of waiting, and it pairs well with a bigger animal on the same trip, since the trophy fees add and the days on the ranch are shared.

Rams are judged on the length and mass of the curl. Look for a ram whose horns have come all the way around, heavy at the base, and let your guide confirm him before you settle in. Hunt from a blind or off the truck, whichever you like. As an exotic it needs only a Texas hunting license, with no season, no draw and no bag limit.

  • Safari-style, off the front of the truck
