Gemsbok is the animal most hunters have in mind when they say they want to hunt Africa without the flight. The picture is exact: a gray body with a black-and-white harlequin face mask, black flank stripe, black leg markings, and a pair of straight rapier horns running three feet or better, all of it standing in dry thornbush. Put the South Texas version next to a Kalahari photograph and most people cannot tell you which is which.
They are the toughest antelope on this property pound for pound and they have a reputation in Africa for being genuinely dangerous when wounded — those horns are straight, sharp, and the animal knows how to use them. That reputation is earned, and it should shape how you hunt one. Take the shot you are sure of. Gemsbok carry a heavy shoulder and a thick hide, and they will run a very long way on a marginal hit through country where following them is unpleasant. A .30 calibre minimum, a premium bullet, and a broadside presentation behind the shoulder is the whole prescription.
Both sexes carry horns again, and here the rule of thumb inverts from what people expect: cows generally carry longer, thinner horns while bulls carry shorter, heavier, thicker-based ones. If you want length you may be looking at a cow, and if you want mass you want a bull, and your guide will want to know which before you leave the lodge. They are herd animals, wary, and comfortable at distance in the open senderos, so most hunts come down to a patient approach or a well-placed sit rather than a foot stalk.
