Plan this huntHunting axis deer here
If you ask a Texas outfitter which exotic gets requested most, the answer is axis, and if you ask which one people come back for, the answer is also axis. They are the best-eating deer in North America by a wide margin — mild, fine-grained, nothing like the taste people brace for with venison — and a mature stag is a genuinely striking animal, heavy through the neck with a white-spotted chestnut coat he keeps his whole life and three-point antlers that run past thirty inches on a good one.
Axis do not follow a calendar the way whitetail do. Individual stags rut on their own schedule, which means there are hard-antlered mature animals on the property in every month of the year, and it means the bugle you hear in July is as real as the one in December. That call is worth planning around. A rutting axis stag roars — a rising, grating bark that carries a long way through brush — and hunting a vocal stag you can hear but cannot see is the most engaging way to take one.
They herd up, and that is the practical problem. Axis run in groups with a lot of eyes and at least one hind who is always looking the wrong direction for you. Getting a clean look at the stag usually means waiting out the herd rather than moving on it. Patience from a blind beats ambition on foot most mornings. They are tougher than their size suggests, so put a proper bullet through the shoulder and be ready to sit still for twenty minutes after the herd blows out, because they circle back more often than people expect.
