The Texas Dall is a hair sheep bred in Texas and named for the white Dall sheep of Alaska it resembles. A painted ram is the same animal in color: a white coat splashed with black or brown, so no two look quite alike, carrying the wide, flaring curl the breed is known for. The horns spread out from the head rather than hugging it, and on a mature ram they can make a broad, impressive frame.
Like the other rams on this board, the painted Texas Dall makes a good first trophy and a good companion hunt. It gives a young hunter or a first-timer a real hunt and a clear decision, and it fits alongside a bigger animal on the same trip, because the trophy fees add and the days on the ranch are shared.
Judge the ram on the curl: length, how far it flares and how much mass it carries at the base. Because every painted ram is marked differently, it is easy to fall for the coat and forget the horns, so let your guide help you sort the mature rams first. Hunt from a blind or off the truck, whichever suits you. There is no season and no bag limit for exotics in Texas, only a Texas hunting license.
